If you were to sell your horse this is what a decent picture would look like. Here are some needed things:

Photographer:
-Stand far away from horse at their shoulder on your knees (zoom in to take photo). This takes away distortions.
-If you are on manual set your camera to about 200 iso and a medium aperature (typically f10 for me, depends on your camera). The ISO gets you details like fur, and the aperature assures that all of the horse will be in focus.
-Set up the horse in a place where the background is non distracting (not the best in this photo but we had no better). No chicken wire, stalls, etc.
-Set up the horse with the light shining on it. The light should be to your back. This helps with muscle definition.

Horse owner:
-Groom your horse! Shaving is nice too if possible because it helps show of the horse's muscle the best.
-Fly spray so no swishing tails.
-Set your horse up perfectly sideways to the camera.
-Have your halter on correctly/tightly (thin halters like this one complement horse's heads the best).
-Square your horse up (this horse isn't perfectly square but it was the best we could do seeing as she is a foal).
-Have your horse standing on ground that is flat.
-Have a helper to get your horse to have it's ears up and alert.

Post-Processing (if possible/needed):
-sharpen the horse
-crop out who is holding the lead rope
-get rid of extra distractions (for instance there was a telephone pole and wires, fencing and a lawn mower that I took out of this photo.
-Levels/Curves for contrast (to help with muscle definition)

Doing these will help you sell your horse because they show off his/her conformation in the best way possible.

very pretty little mare , she seems like she ll make somebody a very fine horse for whatever they plan to do with her ;)
this is a great "for sale" picture , you see the horse s comformation , the shape she s in ( she s not fat , nor too thin) , the smart face, overall very nice ( i hate those pictures that only have the face in it , or the horse whos looking back at you from inside the stall , you can't see anything , and if you go out to see this horse , you might end up going to go see something that s completly different from what you expected .) anyways , very nice

Yeah I know I hate those pictures too. It only takes 30 minutes to get a good picture like this. When my mare was injured I was trying to find a nice horse and saw pictures of Arabians taken in pitch black, all you can see are their eyes reflecting the flash that is very weak. It was sooo bad. XD I bought a book on how to take good photos like this, Horse Photography, and I think every seller needs it.

Thanks so much!

Wow! This is a terrific how-to guide. Thank you so much for sharing! I mostly photograph dogs, but have friends who ask me to do horses but I just really wasn't sure about it. There are some excellent tips in there... Like flyspray!

while i like the clarity and simplicity of the photo, i would like to say that you might want to "hide" some flaws. I've done horse judging and this horse has a short neck as proportion to body size. you might just do a head shot rather than a body shot.

Horses are not just a passion, they're a way of life!

Thank you. She's not my horse and I don't believe in hiding anything from potential buyers. You can have great head shots but a full conformation shot helps out buyers everywhere.
